If you're still using an inkjet or laser printer for shipping labels, you're not just wasting money—you're risking your seller rating. Inkjet prints smudge when they get damp (monsoon season is a nightmare for this). Laser toner flakes off when the label is bent around a polybag.
Thermal printing doesn't use ink. It uses a heated print head to "burn" your barcode onto chemical-treated paper. The result is waterproof, oil-proof, and smudge-proof.
In India, the market is flooded with thermal printers. Having tested dozens, here is our honest take on the current leaders:
The gold standard. It's expensive but lasts for years. If you pack 500+ orders a day, don't look anywhere else. The print head is incredibly durable.
Widely available in India with local service centers. It's a workhorse for small to medium sellers. Reliable and handles different label types well.
Sleek, easy to set up, and works beautifully with 4x6 labels. Great for Mac and Windows users who want a plug-and-play experience.
Cheapest option on Amazon/Flipkart. Great for startups, but be prepared for driver installation hurdles. They work, but need more patience.
Once you get your printer, follow this specific workflow to ensure 100% scanning success:
In your printer driver settings, always set 'Dithering' to 'None' or 'Solid'. This prevents the printer from trying to make 'dots' and ensures your barcode lines are solid black for the courier scanners.
Slow down the print speed to 2 or 3 inches per second and increase the 'Darkness' or 'Density' to 12-14. Slow and dark leads to high-contrast barcodes that scan on the first try.
Thermal printers are low maintenance, but they aren't "no" maintenance. To keep your print head from burning out:
Hardware is only half the battle. If you try to print raw marketplace PDFs, your printer will try to shrink a massive A4 page onto a tiny sticker. The result is unreadable.
That is why we built E-com Crop Toolkit. Our engine strips away the empty borders, extracts just the label, and formats it to fill your 4x6 sticker perfectly. Combined with a decent printer, you'll have a dispatch speed that rivals the biggest warehouses in India.
Don't let manual cutting and taping slow you down. Use the toolkit for free and see the difference in your dispatch time today.
